Gruffalo Crumble

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story, 'The Gruffalo'. The children have been searching for the gruffalo and they thought it would be a good idea to cook some gruffalo crumble to make the Gruffalo come and visit. The children cut up apples and stewed them in sugar in water. They then made a crumble topping using flour, oats and butter. After the crumble was cooked, the children enjoyed tasting it with cream.

Week beginning 12th November 2018

This week reception has been reading the story Whatever Next and learning all about Space. The Bees and Butterflies enjoyed going in the immersive room to go on a space adventure. The children got to see what it looked like in space and also explore what the moon looked like. In the classroom the children had lots of fun using the Google Expedition app to investigate what can be found in an international space station.

    

Autumn Walk - 11.10.18

Reception went on an Autumn walk around the school to look for signs of Autumn. They spotted squirrels getting ready for Winter and they collected lots of crispy leaves that had fallen off the trees. The children also spotted that the leaves on the trees had started to change colour and that the wind was blowing a lot. The children collected leaves and used them to do some leaf rubbings later in the day.

     

Week beginning 8th October 2018

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story ‘Hoot’ and they have been thinking of words to describe the different characters. The children then labelled pictures of a character from the story with a word they chose to describe it. Reception also went for an Autumn walk around the school to look for the signs of Autumn. In maths, the children have been learning to make repeating patterns using colours and shapes.

  

Tiger Tea Party - 5th October 2018

The Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story, 'The Tiger who Came to Tea' and they decided to invite the tiger to school. They made sandwiched for the tiger and themselves. The tiger came to visit and the children had their sandwiches with the tiger and gave him lots of cuddles!

   

  

Week beginning 1st October 2018

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story, ‘The Tiger who came to Tea’. The children have enjoyed writing invitations to the tiger to invite him to our tea party and make sandwiches to eat with him. In Maths, Reception children have been learning the names of common 2D shapes and they have started to use vocabulary such as corners and sides to describe them.

 

Week beginning 24th September 2018

This week the Bees and Butterflies read the story, ‘The Biggest Bed in the World’ and acted it out. In Maths, the children have been learning to find one more than a number using counters and a number line. Reception has also enjoyed learning about their sense of smell and the children smelt a variety of different items and they had to describe and guess what they were.

 

Week beginning 25.6.18

This week the Bees and Butterflies went on a journey to Africa! The children had to find the correct seat number matching their ticket to find their seat. They all listened very carefully to the in-flight safety talk and watched as the plane took off and landed. In Literacy we wrote a list of the items we needed to pack in our suitcase before our trip. After our journey we wrote a recount of what happened and focused on descriptive language. In Maths we have been applying our maths skills to weight, height, and capacity problems.

Week beginning 11th June 2018

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story Handa’s Surprise. In Literacy the children had fun acting out the story and then creating their own story maps to rewrite the story. In Maths, Reception has been learning to describe 2D and 3D shapes using the correct terminology. The children also had lots of fun practising balancing the basket on their heads like Handa and making their own baskets out of clay.

  

Week beginning 4.6.18

This week the Bees and Butterflies went enjoyed a ‘WOW’ day to launch their new topic ‘All around the World’. The children made Indian samosas, Chinese fried rice and created flags and crafts of the globe. The children really loved cooking and tasting the fried rice. On Tuesday we went on a walk around our local area to the shops and Swanswell park. The children saw the swans and even got to see some swan eggs. In literacy we wrote a recount of our walk and made up and wrote our own stories. In maths we have been learning how to double and share numbers.

This week the Bees and Butterflies went on a trip to the farm. The children were so excited about the trip and loved feeding the farm animals, handling the animals and hunting for bugs too! In preparation for their trip they wrote questions about what they would like to find out in Literacy. After the trip they wrote a recount and then also challenged themselves to rewrite the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’. In Maths we have been using money to find the total of two prices and to find change. The children have loved pretending to be shop keepers!

Week beginning: 14th May 2018

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been learning all about farm animals in preparation for our trip to the farm. The children learnt facts about different farm animals and then wrote them in sentences in Literacy. In maths, the children have been learning to add and take away using counters. In the outdoor area, Reception has been making bird feeders so that they can feed the birds to help them grow. In the creative area, children have had lots of fun making muddy pigs using a selection of creative materials.

   

 

This week the Bees and the Butterflies have continued our learning on ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The children are able to retell the story really well and have been trying to write an alternative version of the story. The schools cocoons have finally opened and the children were excited to see the beautiful butterflies inside! We released them into our playground and watched them fly away. In Maths we have been concentrating on using positional language to describe where an object is and to follow and give instructions to navigate the beebots and remote control beetles. The children also enjoyed participating in ‘Ride your bike to school’ day and loved practising their biking skills.

Week Beginning 30th April 2018

This week the Bees and the Butterflies have loved listening to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk which is our new focus text in Literacy. The children have been learning to rewrite the story by including a beginning, middle and end. In Maths, Reception has been learning to add and subtract by counting on or back using a number line or counters. Outside, the children have had lots of fun building beanstalks in the clouds and dissecting broad beans to see what was inside!

Week beginning 16.4.18

This week the Bees and Butterflies started their new topic which is Growth and Change. They had a special delivery on Monday which was some caterpillars that the children will watch grow and turn into butterflies. The story children have been focusing on this week in Literacy is, The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The Bees and Butterflies rewrote the story and they remembered to include a beginning, middle and end. In Maths, Reception has been learning to use the number line to count on and back to solve problems. In the creative area, the children have been making their very own Eric Carle artwork and outside they have enjoyed dissecting different fruits to see what is inside.

Week beginning 12th March 2018

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story, ‘The Bad-Tempered Ladybird’ In Literacy. The children learnt about the features of an insect to help them identify which Minibeasts were insects and which were not. In Maths, Reception has been learning all about time and they have been making o’clock times on the clock. In the Creative area, the children have had lots of fun making insect transient art pictures using a variety of materials.

   

Week Beginning 26th February 2018

This week the Bees and Butterflies have had an exciting week watching the eggs hatch! The children have been very careful and they have asked lots of questions about them. In Literacy, the children have been reading the story Dear Zoo and they then wrote a descriptive piece of writing about their favourite zoo animal. In Maths, the children have been learning to find one more and one less than a number in their heads and using a number line. Some of the children were challenged to find two and even three more or less! Outside the children have had lots of fun playing in the snow which we were fortunate to have this week too and learning about animals that live in the arctic!
